Vloeiweiden, Het Lankheet

Het Lankheet is a prime example of water meadows in the Netherlands and their fine integration into a regional hydrological system. The Het Lankheet estate covers 500 hectares and is located in the Twente region not far from the border with Germany. In the first decade of the 21st century, large areas of water meadows (17 ha) were restored at Het Lankheet and have since been used as meadow grassland. On the basis of large, historically and currently managed irrigation areas, research is being carried out to understand and visualise the complex conditions of the Dutch water meadow areas. The results have been published in ‘Stromend Landschap’. The authors call the reconstruction of historical meadow irrigation ‘experimental archaeology’, which is highly interdisciplinary.
