Pré d'abissage

The small irrigation area of Cierreux is located near the village of the same name in the Belgian Ardennes, about 5 kilometres south of the small town of Vielsam in the catchment area of the Salm. The area is representative of the plateau locations of the higher Ardennes, where gentle hollows alternate with flat saddles. Cierreux is an example of traditional irrigation in a shallow valley on a plateau. The irrigation area is located in the ‘Forêt Dominale du Grand Bois’ and stretches almost east-west. After the irrigation system was abandoned after the Second World War, construction work was carried out in the winter of 2012/2013 to restore the 800-metre-long canal system. The example of the rehabilitation of the Cierreux water meadow shows that such work takes a lot of time and requires a group of enthusiastic people to get behind it.
